The room was crowded and dark and Mac had never felt more out of place in her life. She wasn’t exactly sure why Aaron Echolls had invited her to
Mac saw Dick approach
“Dude, what the hell are you doing?” Dick said to
Mac felt shocked at these words. She’d always known Dick was an asshole, but she thought he at least respected his friends. Mac saw Veronica look down at the floor and she felt bad for her friend, but she also felt at loss for what to do. It wasn’t like this was a familiar situation for her.
“Goodbye, Dick,”
“What?” Dick asked, staring at him friend in confusion.
“Get out of my house,”
As Dick backed away from
Mac watched with surprise as
Mac wanted to ask him what was wrong, but on the other hand, he’d just been a total asshole to her friend, so she wasn’t too inclined to care.
“You know, you’ve got a weird way of showing up in places I don’t expect you to show up in,” Dick said as Mac walked past him on her way to her Beetle.
“And you have a totally expected way of being a complete asshole,” Mac replied without even looking at him. As she was getting her door open, she jumped in surprise because Dick had slid in between her and the car, closing the door with his body.
“And just what the hell is that supposed to mean?” he asked as he looked down at her with annoyance in his eyes.
“It means that you just called my best friend a skank because she happens to be dating one of your friends,” Mac told him with a glare. “Now, would you move the hell out of my way so I can go home?”
“I didn’t call Ronnie a skank, I asked
“I know what you said, Dick, the whole party heard you!” Mac exclaimed before she punched his shoulder again. “You are just such an asshole!”
“Yeah, so, you’ve always known that about me,” Dick replied, pouting at her for punching him. “Why are you so angry with me?”
“I just don’t like it when people are mean to my friends,” Mac told him with a deep sigh. “Do you think you can get out of my way now?”
“So, you kind of disappeared after
“I didn’t disappear just because you went back to being your normal, unobservant self,” Mac replied, rolling her eyes at him.
“I didn’t,” Dick said quietly as he looked down into her eyes.
“What?” Mac asked, confused by what he meant.
“I didn’t go back to being normal and unobservant,” Dick explained as he once again slid the blue strand of her hair through his fingers while he made Mac shiver from the intensity of his stare. “I just didn’t want to tell you that I’ve kind of been watching you at school lately.”
“So, why are you telling me now?” Mac asked as she stared into his eyes, wishing she could look away from him.
“Because, I liked talking to you that night and it seems like honesty is a better policy with you, Ghost World,” Dick replied, grinning slyly at her.
“Ghost World?” she questioned while tilting her head to the side.
“Yeah, I figured since you remind of
“Oh, my, god, I totally forgot to give that movie back to you!” Mac exclaimed, suddenly embarrassed for taking it. “I’m sorry; I’ll bring it to school on Monday and find you.”
“Hey, don’t worry about,” Dick told her with a smile. “You can keep it, I don’t mind.”
“Oh, okay,” Mac replied and started to feel that loss of air sensation as Dick lowered his head toward hers again. This time, they were interrupted by the sound of glass smashing on the other side of the parking lot.
“What the hell?” Dick asked, looking away from Mac and over at
“Okay, I’ve got to get home anyway,” Mac replied and she got into her car before Dick could stop her, closing the door on him as her nerves went into overdrive, shocked at the fact that he had tried to kiss her for the second time.
