Disclaimer: I don't own anything having to do with Veronica Mars. All characters and places belong to Rob Thomas. Lines in italics are from the episode. The title of the story comes from a Gilmore Girls episode.
Author's Note: So, I had this "I wonder what would happen if Mac and Dick interacted with each other in each party the show has throughout the seasons" thought and this is the second chapter from that idea. I hope you guys like this second chapter.

The room was crowded and dark and Mac had never felt more out of place in her life. She wasn’t exactly sure why Aaron Echolls had invited her to Logan’s birthday party, but she didn’t have anything else to do and Wallace said he thought it’d be fun. Of course, once they’d gotten there, Wallace had left to socialize and now Mac wasn’t feeling like this was a lot of fun. She was just starting to consider leaving when the door opened, the lights came on and Mac saw Veronica and Logan making out in the doorway.

Mac saw Dick approach Logan and she looked on curiously, wondering what he was going to say. She hadn’t spoken to him since Madison Sinclair’s birthday party and though she’d like to say she hadn’t thought about him since then too, she couldn’t lie to herself.

“Dude, what the hell are you doing?” Dick said to Logan in a whisper that actually carried throughout the entire room. “Please tell me this is like, some new reality show called ‘My Skank’.”

Mac felt shocked at these words. She’d always known Dick was an asshole, but she thought he at least respected his friends. Mac saw Veronica look down at the floor and she felt bad for her friend, but she also felt at loss for what to do. It wasn’t like this was a familiar situation for her.

“Goodbye, Dick,” Logan said, shocking the entire room.

“What?” Dick asked, staring at him friend in confusion.

“Get out of my house,” Logan told him before speaking louder. “You have a problem with Veronica, you leave. Actually, you have a problem with Veronica, you’re pretty much dead to me, so just, like, evaporate or something, I dunno.”

As Dick backed away from Logan, clearly surprised, Logan addressed the entire room. “That’s kind of a general invitation. If you don’t like my girlfriend then just start heading toward the rectangle with the knob.”

Mac watched with surprise as Duncan walked out of the house, shocking everyone. Once the drama seemed to be over, the music came back on and everybody seemed to start enjoying themselves. Mac hung out with Veronica a little bit but when she and Logan disappeared, Mac started to consider leaving the party. As she walked outside, she saw Dick sitting on the hood of his truck, drinking from a cup and looking upset.

Mac wanted to ask him what was wrong, but on the other hand, he’d just been a total asshole to her friend, so she wasn’t too inclined to care.

“You know, you’ve got a weird way of showing up in places I don’t expect you to show up in,” Dick said as Mac walked past him on her way to her Beetle.

“And you have a totally expected way of being a complete asshole,” Mac replied without even looking at him. As she was getting her door open, she jumped in surprise because Dick had slid in between her and the car, closing the door with his body.

“And just what the hell is that supposed to mean?” he asked as he looked down at her with annoyance in his eyes.

“It means that you just called my best friend a skank because she happens to be dating one of your friends,” Mac told him with a glare. “Now, would you move the hell out of my way so I can go home?”

“I didn’t call Ronnie a skank, I asked Logan if…” Dick started to say but Mac punched his shoulder, interrupting him.

“I know what you said, Dick, the whole party heard you!” Mac exclaimed before she punched his shoulder again. “You are just such an asshole!”

“Yeah, so, you’ve always known that about me,” Dick replied, pouting at her for punching him. “Why are you so angry with me?”

“I just don’t like it when people are mean to my friends,” Mac told him with a deep sigh. “Do you think you can get out of my way now?”

“So, you kind of disappeared after Madison’s party,” Dick said as he leaned against her car and crossed his arms over his chest, refusing to move.

“I didn’t disappear just because you went back to being your normal, unobservant self,” Mac replied, rolling her eyes at him.

“I didn’t,” Dick said quietly as he looked down into her eyes.

“What?” Mac asked, confused by what he meant.

“I didn’t go back to being normal and unobservant,” Dick explained as he once again slid the blue strand of her hair through his fingers while he made Mac shiver from the intensity of his stare. “I just didn’t want to tell you that I’ve kind of been watching you at school lately.”

“So, why are you telling me now?” Mac asked as she stared into his eyes, wishing she could look away from him.

“Because, I liked talking to you that night and it seems like honesty is a better policy with you, Ghost World,” Dick replied, grinning slyly at her.

“Ghost World?” she questioned while tilting her head to the side.

“Yeah, I figured since you remind of Enid and you stole that movie from me, that’s what I’m going to call you from now on,” Dick explained, smirking at her.

“Oh, my, god, I totally forgot to give that movie back to you!” Mac exclaimed, suddenly embarrassed for taking it. “I’m sorry; I’ll bring it to school on Monday and find you.”

“Hey, don’t worry about,” Dick told her with a smile. “You can keep it, I don’t mind.”

“Oh, okay,” Mac replied and started to feel that loss of air sensation as Dick lowered his head toward hers again. This time, they were interrupted by the sound of glass smashing on the other side of the parking lot.

“What the hell?” Dick asked, looking away from Mac and over at Duncan, who was now beating on his car with a board while they could hear Meg yelling at him. “I’m gonna go see what’s going on.”

“Okay, I’ve got to get home anyway,” Mac replied and she got into her car before Dick could stop her, closing the door on him as her nerves went into overdrive, shocked at the fact that he had tried to kiss her for the second time.
